Rememberence

ALMOST everyone from New Orleans loves those dirty swamp crawfish but how many of you have you have gone into
the swamps to catch them? When I was a kid (many, many years ago) my dad, Thomas Michael, Sr. (Tom) and I used to
go down Old Gentilly Highway (no I-10 then) with basket, chicken necks and crawfish nets he made himself. He wore his
hip high rubber boots (he was a fireman, you know) and carefully walked into the swamps to place the nets which had a
white rag tied on them so he could spot them to pick up. I sat on a tree stump watching and waiting for him to bring the
nets in to empty the catch into the basket and at times warning him to watch out for snakes. After taking our catch home,
watching my dad purge them, adding the seasoning to boiling water it seemed forever for them to cook. But I did get
samples during that waiting period. It was well worth the wait. Happy memories of good times with my dad.

Rememberence

William Aloysius, first son of our Peter and Mary, was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 714. Also a member
of the same council was Peter William, first son of Michael Joseph, another generation. I am curious to know if any other
family members belonged to that Council.

Rememberence

I recall my grandfather, Thomas M. Fitzpatrick, Sr. (aka Cap, Mr. Fitz, PawPaw), taking me as a boy to Bozo's restaurant in New Orleans - at their original location to get takeout seafood. Behind the oyster bar worked Pete Fountain's dad. PawPaw nudged me and pointed to a guy hunched over a plate of oysters at the end of the counter and said, "Philly. See that guy over there? That's Doug Atkins." Doug Atkins was a defensive lineman for the N.O. Saints (he was with the Chicago Bears before), stood 6'9", and was known as the meanest man in football. He didn't look that big to me, all hunched over slurping oysters, and I thought PawPaw was just pulling my leg. I was a huge Saints fan as a kid, though we lived in Houston, and the thought of actually meeting one of the players was beyond my comprehension. After getting several sacks of crabs, oysters, and crawfish we started to head for the door. As PawPaw reached the door with his arms full, he said, "Hey Doug, could you get the door for me?" The man sitting at the end of the counter turned and said, "Hey, sure Mr. Fitz." He stood up and seemed to unfurl his body, he was so big. PawPaw was a big guy - 6'3", but Doug loomed over him. I stood there just watching him rise, craining my neck as far as it would go. It seemed his head would poke through the roof. And he was not only tall, but looked like a slab of granite. PawPaw said, "Doug this is my grandson, Philly." He said hello and shook my hand. My hand fit in his like I was shaking hands with a huge pillow. I think I managed to sqeak out a hello. My grandfather knew Doug and a number of the other Saints players from his work in the clubhouse at City Park golf course. From that day forward I took every word by PawPaw said as the gospel truth. And it was.

Rememberence

When I was just a child, living at 2728 Burgundy (the house that our Patriarch Peter built), during the summer we would go out in the evenings and get a snow ball. That's a "snow cone" to those of you living up north <grin>.... My favorite flavor was spearmint. When I met cousin Mick in April 99, we were talking about things like that and amazingly, we realized that we both went to the same snow ball stand. It's truly a small small world....and the memories flood back.....

Rememberence

The very first year that I was married I was living in Hampton, Virginia with my husband Bob who was in the Air Force. We were a long way from home and missed our favorite New Orleans style foods. Our first Thanksgiving was approaching and we couldn't travel home to be with our families. Bob decided to invite one of his Air Force buddies to have Thanksgiving dinner with us. Baked turkey, oyster dressing, giblet gravy, etc.; I hadn't cooked anything like that before! My grandmother, Mae Fitzpatrick Dupuy, must have known how a young newly married wife (that couldn't really cook) felt! She sent me her (handwritten) own recipes for oyster dressing, giblet gravy and a few words of encouragement. Well, I did follow her recipes and advice. Dinner was delicious. From that my husband thought I could cook!! I still fix that traditional Thanksgiving dinner for my family ever year. And I still use Gramma's recipe each time. It's worn and yellowed but it means the world to me. It's like still having her with me.

Rememberence

Mae Fitzpatrick Dupuy was my mother. She had all of the qualities that a true daughter of Ireland has. She had a heart of gold, eyes that sparkled when she smiled, which was often and a wonderful sense of humor that I am happy to say was passed on to all of her children. She was also tough when she had to be. To this day, if some problem comes up in my life, I can see and hear her telling me, " Where's your irish, get your irish up! It always helps me handle what ever it is. It was not an easy life back in the late twenty's and thirty's but Mama helped us get through with her love for us. We all miss her and she will be with us until we meet again on the other side. I thank God for letting me have her for my mother.

Rememberence

Hi. Was cruising the net and read with great interest your stories. I doubt if we are of the same family but it is always interesting to learn of Fitzpatricks. I had tried to skip over the "branch of Peter's children" section but was unable to do so. I live in Fort Wayne, Indiana. My father, Thomas John Fitzpatrick, was born in Marion, Indiana in 1893. His mother died when he was three years old and he was raised in the Catholic Orphanage in Lafayette, Indiana until he was 15 years old when he went to live with a relative. Therefore, I know very little of my ancestors. Hope you'll forgive the intrusion. Good luck with your reunion this summer. Roberta (Fitzpatrick) Roth
